After five years of preparation by the Chinese and the Special Olympic Committee International, the Shanghai games were host to 10,000 athletes and coaches from 164 countries. The Congolese delegation included four athletes, Christian Bigemie, 29, for the 100 and 200m run; Fida Nguie-Ndoulou, 23, for the 50 m run; Alexandre Mbika, 14 for the 50 m run; Marie Noelle Ibourissou, 9, for the 50 m run; coach Celestin Biampandou; and head of the delegation, Sister Brigitte Yengo. Our Congolese athletes did themselves proud with Christian and Fida winning gold- the first ever for the Congo; Marie Noelle won silver, and Alexandre bronze. Congratulations to all for their efforts.

The red carpet was spread for the athletes in Shanghai. Thousands of volunteers, officials, media people, Hollywood types, and enthusiastic citizens from Shanghai made the delegation feel happy and gave our athletes a sense of discipline and confidence. The Healthy Program at the Olympics assured that each athlete got a complete checkup: those with eye problems received glasses, foot support shoes for foot problems. The volunteer doctors did complete physicals with love, patience and expertise.
